Floorball color balls up for grabs

Oh goodie floorball balls up for grabs at last! Striking colors and attractive prices too..Though these aren't IFF certified yet they are pretty good beginner balls coz:
1. softer and therefore cheaper.
2. they don't travel as fast thus won't hurt when u get hit.
3. they're so similar to the certified ones u can't tell the difference.

Just check out the pics to make your selection.

Figure 1: these balls have dimple on them. Very much like the precision ones but slightly softer. Only white balls are unavailable at the moment. RM4.00 per ball.

Figure 2: These balls have no dimples and are softer and smoother than in Figure 1. Perfect for youngsters. Whites are unavailable. We may have red ones. RM3.00 per ball.

Floorball in S.M. All Saints

Date : 6th November 2007
Time : 7:30am - 9:30am
Venue : S.M. All Saints Hall

It was a Tuesday morning and we had to arrive by 7am to setup goal cages, tables, pens, etc.

We were introducing floorball into S.M All Saints to the form 3 students that faithful morning. What an opportunity! What an early day it was too! Being typical Nomads that we are, we arrive with empty stomachs. Rule #1, never play floorball infront of a bunch of enthusiastic students AND teachers without nourishment. aka. breakfast.

Ofcourse things did not happen as planned too, for example ; all 100 students or so and atleast 3 teachers with laptops sitting with tables on stage, waiting for me to begin (the students are suppose to come in batches of 20s). Not to mention, my team were having difficult putting up the goal cages with the added pressure of 200 eye balls watching. Rule #2, HAVE A PLAN B.

So we started by introducing the rules:-
- high stick
- slashing, hooking, lifting
- between legs
- jumping
- diving
- pushing, holding, blocking
- dribbling with feet, heading
- FAQ

Rounded the first 12 enthusiastic bunch of guys and 12 skeptical bunch of girls, we did passes followed by the next group until the time when everyone was waiting for. GAME TIME!

The rest of the morning went very well with request from both students and teachers for us to continue playing till school finishes. Such a good offer but by looking at the time - 10am, we've gotta go to BREAK FAST. Also a good way to keep them joining us on Saturday nights for more.

Excellent!

A floorball friendly competition was held on the 28th of October 2007 at SM. SHAN TAO school hall. There were 6 participating teams; D'Gap Team, Nomad Floorball Club (NFC), Skyline Team, Rainfield Team, Elektos Team and Grace Chapel Team. In the end, Grace Chapel emerged as the champion of the tournament defeating NFC in the finals for the gold medal. NFC in turn was the silver medalist and congrats to the team for a job well done. Well this is just the beginning. In future tournaments, NFC would give other teams a run for their money. Heheh.=p Enjoy the snippets of this ausipicious event. Well done to Nomads.

Floorball Clinic

The Nomad Floorball Club (NFC) attended a floorball clinic (Sri Kepayan Community Hall) on the 27th Oct 2007. And we are so blessed to have the Penang Floorball Association (PFA) President, Mr. Edward Lim who hails from Penang to coach and shows us the nitty gritty tips of floorball. A real eye opener for rookies like me..its' just 4 months since taking up this sport. There's so much too learn..coming from the state team coach (Mr. Edward). Look through the pics to learn more.

Mr. Edward showing our team captain Shawn how to be a goalie. Notice all the protective gear he's wearing.

Mr. Edward briefing the participants with Penny his assistant looking on.

This the wrong way to hold your stick.

The right way to hold the stick. Held at the end for added power while shooting.

The ideal length of a stick which generally reaches till the bellybutton of the person.

While you hold your stick, your fore finger should not be sticking out to avoid injury. (pic left). The right way is to grip the stick with no fingers sticking out.

As we've mentioned before, floorball sticks cater to both lefties and righties. For lefties, they may want to use a right stick which shoots from the right side due to the blade that curves towards the left. You hold the top of the stick with your left while your right is below your left. The power thus comes from your left hand. Its' the same principle for righties but in the opposite. The righties would use a left stick to shoot from the left side. Below is a comparison between a left stick and right stick.

Left stick (top), right stick (bottom).

Right stick with the blade curving towards the left (left). Left stick with the blade curving towards the right (right).

Now here's an example of how to shoot from the right side and left side. Lots and lots of practice needed to familiarise yourself with the stick. Let it be your second skin.

Shooting from the right with a right stick.

Shooting from the left with a left stick.

Learning how to control the ball by bouncing it on the blade a few times. Needs lot of grace and steadiness.

Good things must always come to an end though yet the clinic was realy helpful for those who don't have a clue bout floorball. So now for homework, its' back to practice in the end. Last but not least, a grateful thank you to Mr. Edward and his team for their wilingness to come.

Intro to floorball

'Floor'-'ball'... sounds like playing ball on floors..but that's what most other team sports do..what's so special about this sport?

What's so 'IN' bout this sport?
  • its' easy..all you need is a light hollow plastic ball, hands, legs and of course your stick.

  • its' safe...the stick is ~350gram and made of composite or carbon and the ball is super light. You won't break a head.

  • rain or shine the game continues. Its' played indoors by the way...on horizontal surface.=p

  • the rules are easy.. play safe with a few strategies here and there and you've got it.

  • just needs 5-6 people per team. 6 if you've got a goalkeeper.

  • scoring? easy just shoot the ball into the opponents net and you win.

  • worried bout geting punched up? Never fret..time penalties would be given to players who play dirty..2-10 mins at the max. Ouch...

  • what stick? Well the stick is similar to a hockey puck but its' customised to fit lefties and righties based on the direction of the blade's curve. Its' light, hollow and made of composite or carbon fibre.

  • its' hassle free. No need to dress up. Sportsware is just nice...And please no 'kaki ayam'.

  • want to get 'groovin'? practice practice practice....practice makes perfect.

Hungry for more? stay tune for more...this is just the beginning.

Specially dedicated to rookies and veterans alike. Cheers=p
